Saturday Wire Fund Club
What is the Saturday Country Wire and Damage Fund?
The fund was originally set up in 1947 to assist the Hunt in fence repairs, opening up of country and entertaining farmers in the Belton area of Quorn Hunt Country. The idea came on a return trip from the Grand National: founder members were Frank and Jane Hewitt, Charlie and Nan Shields, Tom and Dorothy Hughes, Major Shakespeare and Ron and Edna Cotton ,who were quickly joined by Daphne Barnett, ( nee Porter), Bill and Peggy Loweth and Donald and Rosemary Shields.
The Committee has regularly fund raised ever since with support from enthusiastic and hard working members, including some well known hunting characters! In fact the continuity has been illustrated by the fact that there have only ever been 3 chairmen and the aims of the fund remain the same, together with general support for the hunt.
Saturdays may not be the most fashionable area and you still need a good horse to take on some of the trappier places but it has been a good area for people to learn about hunting.
News
John and Jean Adkin once again hosted our BBQ and Rounders Match at Hill Parks Farm, Belton. We are grateful to them, and to the BBQ team and disco which helped to make the night a success with a healthy profit being made in spite of the weather, which affected the turn out, as it has for so many events this summer!
A small amount of fencing has been undertaken with various sites ear marked for additional jumping places for use as soon as activities get underway.
This year the Fund celebrated its 60th Anniversary and we held a celebration luncheon at Fairways in September. 70 people attended and it was super to see old friends like Linda Matthews, David and Tessa Williams, Jill and Tony Wright, Martin and Sally Thornton, as well as our usual wonderful supporters. Jonathan Inglesant gave an amusing speech including lots of lovely memories. Miss Kim Turner M.F.H. made a short thank you speech, with a few amusing comments that she may regret at a later date !!! I am sure the founder members would have thoroughly approved!
